In an eventful month, new whisky releases continued to arrive in March 2025. From some of the oldest whisky releases from distilleries to category and producer firsts, March was also a turbulent month for the entire whisky industry.
The month was marked by uncertainty caused by Trump's expected tariffs and retaliation from other countries, which are expected to cause turmoil not only in the US but also affect whisky producers and consumers worldwide.
In the US, Diageo announced the temporary closure of its Lebanon Distillery in Kentucky. Furthermore, the company announced it will no longer bring new brands to its incubator program, Distill Ventures. For Green River Distilling, the looming tariffs resulted in the company's announcement of downsizing a quarter of its workforce in Owensboro, Kentucky.
In Ireland, Irish Distillers announced the temporary closure of its Midleton Distillery in Cork, home to Jameson and Redbreast whiskeys, from April to the summer of 2025. Walsh Whiskey also hit a snag in March when the plans for its distillery in Dunleckney, Ireland, were rejected.
On a more positive note, the Japan Spirits & Liqueurs Makers Association (JSLMA) announced its plans to register Japanese whisky with geographical indication. Currently, the association's guidelines are only expected to be adhered to by its members. The GI status would establish rules for all whiskies made in Japan.
In India, the Indian Malt Whisky Association (IMWA) was officially launched on 20 March 2025. The association, founded by four of India's largest whisky producers, aims to ensure the authenticity of Indian single malts and blended malts.

Glenrothes The 51
Marking the oldest expression from the Glenrothes distillery, The 51 is officially launched on 2 April. The 51-year-old single malt is encased in a Jesmonite column that must be smashed to access the bottle. Inspired by the orchid, the brand states that the whisky within the packaging is available ‘exclusively for those who dare to discover.’ After breaking the vessel, people can send the fragments back to the distillery to be reassembled into a vase by a Kintsugi artist using precious metals.
The single malt is crafted from two casks, resulting in a limited edition of just 100 bottles. Retailing at £37,000 ($46,500), The 51 will be available through select whisky specialists, including Sotheby’s, boutique whisky shops, and luxury retailers like Harrods.
