Some time ago, we published our adventurous look into the whiskey distilleries in the United States (click to read the article). Now, we decided to share the boring, detailed information - state by state - on what we included and how they were divided. Since it is nearly impossible to include everything (although we have tried), please do excuse us if we have forgotten a distillery. We have managed to include 1,067 distilleries currently making whiskey in the US.
Whiskey as a Priority
In this article, you can find the names of the distilleries, their establishing year, location, styles of whiskies they produce, and whether they primarily make whiskey or whiskey-related products. Since many distilleries make other spirits alongside whiskey, we have had to determine a division somehow. Please be advised that we have done so by looking into the products currently made available by the distilleries and their plans for the future.
Priority - Yes
Distilleries marked 'Yes' are producing whiskey/whisky as their primary product. In cases where the producer makes multiple different spirits without a clear focus, we have had to use our judgment to decide which way the scale tips. If a distillery is producing for example vodka and gin while waiting for their whiskey to mature, we have tried to consider that.
Priority - No
You might find distilleries producing moonshine, unaged whiskey and spirits, rice whiskey, or whiskey liquors as their primary product in this category, but only if they also make at least one variety of whiskey/whisky.
Percentage
The percentage seen underneath the 'Priority' column indicates how many distilleries in the state total can be deemed as focusing on whiskey.
Styles
Please find the abbreviations underneath for the different styles of whiskey made by distilleries used in the graphs that are provided.
B - Bourbon
( T - Tennessee Whiskey )
S - Single Malt
R - Rye Whiskey
W - Wheat Whiskey
C - Aged Corn Whiskey
BL - Blended Whiskey
A - Any Other Unspecified / American Whiskey
Establishing Year
We have marked the first established distillery, still operational, in the state with dark green.
We hope you enjoy being a whiskey nerd with us!
